About Ignitec

Ignitec is a product design and engineering consultancy developing technology for clients across the industrial, medical, defence and energy sectors.

Our multidisciplinary team brings together embedded systems, electronics, software, mechanical design and manufacturing expertise, taking products from initial ideas through to testing, manufacture and deployment.

You could be developing firmware for a connected device, bringing up a new sensor board or investigating a fault on a prototype. You’ll learn how your work fits into the complete product and how different engineering disciplines work together to deliver it.

The role

We’re looking for a Junior Embedded Engineer to help develop, test and maintain embedded firmware, working closely with our embedded and electronics engineers.

You’ll receive mentoring, technical guidance and regular feedback. You’ll begin with clearly defined tasks and take on greater responsibility as your skills, confidence and judgement develop.

We’re looking for a sound technical foundation, practical curiosity and a willingness to learn. University projects, apprenticeships, placements and things you’ve built in your own time all count.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop embedded firmware in C and C++, with support from experienced engineers.
  • Work with microcontrollers such as STM32 and ESP32.
  • Integrate sensors, actuators, displays and other peripherals using interfaces such as UART, SPI and I²C.
  • Support connected product development using technologies such as Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi.
  • Help electronics engineers bring up new PCBs, integrate firmware and investigate faults.
  • Prototype and test using development boards and custom hardware.
  • Write clear, maintainable code and participate in code reviews.
  • Check your work against agreed requirements and record test results.
  • Maintain technical notes, development records and test procedures.
  • Contribute to technical discussions, design reviews and project meetings.
  • Take ownership of small, defined tasks, keep colleagues informed and raise problems early.

Enjoy writing code and seeing it work on real hardware?
We’d love to hear about the things you’ve built, tested or figured out.

What we’re looking for

Essential requirements

A sound foundation. A practical curiosity.
We’re looking for some hands-on experience with C or C++ and microcontrollers, an understanding of basic electronics and an interest in solving problems. You don’t need years of commercial experience: projects from study, placements or your own workbench are just as relevant.

  • A degree, HND, relevant apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience in embedded systems, electronic engineering, computer engineering, computer science or a related discipline.
  • A working understanding of C or C++, demonstrated through practical projects.
  • Some experience programming microcontrollers through study, personal projects, placements or employment.
  • An understanding of basic electronics and the ability to follow simple schematics.
  • Familiarity with common microcontroller peripherals or interfaces, such as GPIO, ADC, UART, SPI or I²C.
  • A logical, methodical approach to debugging and problem-solving.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
  • Attention to detail and a willingness to check and improve your work.

Desirable experience

Worked with connected devices or enjoyed debugging hardware?

Experience connecting a device over BLE, Wi-Fi or LoRa would be a useful starting point for our connected product projects.

We’d also love to hear about hands-on debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analysers or JTAG/SWD tools. Neither area is essential, and you’ll have opportunities to develop these skills with us.

Experience with any of the following would be an advantage:

  • STM32CubeIDE, ESP-IDF or similar development environments.
  • FreeRTOS or another real-time operating system.
  • BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa or other wireless technologies.
  • Git or another version control system.
  • Oscilloscopes, logic analysers, multimeters or JTAG/SWD debugging.
  • Soldering, electronics prototyping or PCB assembly.
  • Python or scripting for testing and automation.
  • Firmware testing, firmware updates or IoT connectivity.

You don’t need experience with every technology we use. We’re interested in your technical foundations, how you approach problems and your potential to develop.

We value people who take ownership, ask thoughtful questions, act on feedback and care about the quality of their work. You’ll have support from experienced colleagues, alongside opportunities to become more independent as you develop.

What we offer

£30,000-£34,000 per annum

Depending on skills and experience.

  • Profit share: Eligibility for our team-wide profit share scheme after 12 months.
  • Time to recharge: 32 days’ total holiday, including bank holidays, Christmas closure allowance and a separate paid day off for your birthday.
  • Flexible working: Flexible/hybrid working available, alongside flexible working hours.
  • Electric vehicle scheme: Access to our salary sacrifice EV scheme.
  • Experienced support: Mentoring and technical guidance from experienced engineers.
  • Career development: Ongoing professional development and clear career progression.
  • Varied projects: Work across different technologies and industries.
  • Real product development: Hands-on involvement throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • A collaborative team: A friendly engineering environment where questions and ideas are welcome.

You’ll learn through practical project experience, code reviews and technical feedback. As your confidence grows, we’ll help you take on more responsibility and explore progression towards Embedded Engineer, Senior Embedded Engineer and, over time, specialist or leadership roles.

Why join Ignitec?

Build your skills on products that leave the workbench.

You’ll experience a variety of engineering challenges, work with different technologies and learn from colleagues across several disciplines.

You’ll see your firmware running on real hardware and understand how your contribution helps turn an idea into a working product. Along the way, you’ll build the technical skills, judgement and confidence to take on more demanding work.

If you enjoy understanding how things work, building things and solving practical problems, we’d love to hear from you.
