Role Overview

The Mechanical Design Engineer will develop practical, robust and commercially viable designs from early concepts through detailed design, prototyping, verification and transfer into manufacture. The role suits an engineer who enjoys solving real product-development problems and can balance performance, usability, compliance, cost and manufacturability.

Working within a multidisciplinary design and engineering team, you will take ownership of mechanical work packages across a range of electromechanical products. Projects may include low-volume prototypes, regulated devices and products intended for scaled manufacture. You will collaborate closely with electronics and firmware engineers, project managers, clients, suppliers and manufacturing partners.

Responsibilities:  

  • Interpret and clarify client requirements and translate them into practical, commercially viable mechanical designs. 
  • Produce designs suitable for concept, MVP, and production stages of the design cycle 
  • Generate high-quality technical drawings to BS 8888 and GD&T standards 
  • Prototype, test and verify designs against project requirements, troubleshooting issues as required. 
  • Follow structured sign-off and release control processes 
  • Operating in-house 3D printers 
  • Work across multidisciplinary electronics, firmware, commercial etc. 
  • Confidently present concepts and manufacturing approaches to clients and stakeholders 
  • Management of BoMs 
  • Liaison with suppliers 
  • Commercial awareness to produce commercially viable designs 
  • Assist in operational activities – ordering of parts, stores, shipping etc  

Essential Skills 

  • 4+ years of commercial engineering experience – Academic experience will not count towards this requirement. 
  • 4+ years of commercial experience using SolidWorks  
  • Ability to produce clear technical drawings to BS 8888 and use GD&T appropriately. 
  • Experience with electro-mechanical products 
  • Experience taking products through the full product lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through verification, manufacture and release. 
  • Experience of design for manufacture and assembly 
  • Experience of designing components suitable for various manufacturing methods – injection moulding, sheet metal, 3D printing, machining etc. 
  • Confident presenting to director-level clients and stakeholders 
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment 

Desirable skills  

  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 processes, document control and design release. 
  • Experience in regulated sectors such as medical, aerospace, defence or energy.  
  • Understanding of  ATEX, IECEX, HAZLOC or other product compliance requirements. 
  • Experience designing Ex i and/or Ex d enclosures 
  • Manufacturing experience  
  • Industrial/Product design  
  • Consultancy experience 
  • Experience with simulation tools such as SolidWorks Simulation, MATLAB or Python. 
  • Experience with KeyShot or similar rendering tools for communicating design concepts.
